Men Stroll Across A&M Campus in High Heels Against Sexual Violence

COLLEGE STATION Men in high heels strolled across the Texas A&M campus Tuesday night to call attention to something other than themselves.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an annual event to raise awareness and educate the community about the problem of sexual violence.

It's a humorous walk on the wild side, for a very serious issue.
And a lot of red high heels hit the pavement and sidewalks.

One A&M student said, "I'm going to try to get some stride in here, uh,uh."

You can't help but laugh when you see men trying the un-manly balancing act of walking in high heels.

But the reason for all this is not so laughable.

Texas A&M Women's Resource Center Assistant Coordinator Sonia Mahabir says, "Sexual assault, sexual violence, stalking, relation violence is a problem all across this country, all across the world. And basically anything we can do to to continue raising awaremenss and reduce violence will be helpful. It affects children, it affects the elderly, it affects college students, it affects everyone."

Texas A&M students, faculty, staff, even local law enforcement donned heels to walk across campus, for men to take a visible, and somewhat wobbly stand against sexual violence in our community.

A&M student Patrick Lloid took part in the walk. "I never imagined like, how difficult it would be to walk in heels and then it also led you to start thinking about all the things that women actually have to go through."

The proceeds from Walk a Mile in Her Shoes are used to pay for education on sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking on the A&M campus.

News 3's Michael Oder served as master of ceremonies for the event.
