Milam County: Missing Man Believed Found

Milam County, TX Milam County Sheriff’s Office terminated their search for Larry Wayne Bennett on Saturday upon locating the remains of a person they believe to be Mr. Bennett.

Family members reported Mr. Bennett missing to the Milam County Sheriff’s Office on June 22nd. Mr. Bennett’s vehicle was located parked off of Milam County Road 264 near Sugar Loaf Mountain, an area that Mr. Bennett was known to visit and hike occasionally. Initially Lt. J. Beathard and Deputy Mike Hoyt searched the area of Sugar Loaf Mountain on foot, however it was quickly determined that a foot search would not be effective without assistance from K-9 search dogs due to the rough terrain.

Chief Deputy White contacted Search Dog Network out of Bryan Texas; arrangements for search and recovery operations were scheduled for June 26th. Search Dog Network is a volunteer group specializing in Search and Rescue incidents utilizing dogs specially trained in locating missing persons. Teams searched the rough and thickly wooded terrain for just over five hours but were unsuccessful in locating Mr. Bennett. The search was suspended due to the high temperatures taking a toll on personnel assisting in the search.

Search Dog Network teams resumed their search on Saturday, June 29th with additional members from the Alamo Area Search and Rescue and Travis County Search and Rescue out of Austin. After searching for just over four hours, search teams located the human remains, at which point deputies started to process the area for evidence and documentation.

Texas Ranger Matt Lindemann and Forensic Anthropologist, Harrell Gill-King, of the University of North Texas travelled to the location and assisted in processing the area where the remains were located. The remains were then transported to the Travis County Medical Examiner in Austin for an autopsy. During the autopsy, there were no signs of trauma or any indication of foul play; however due to extensive decomposed condition of the body, the cause of death could not be determined during the initial report.

Although the evidence at the scene indicates that the remains are those of Mr. Bennett, the Travis County Medical Examiner is awaiting dental records before that determination is made officially.
