CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) Authorities have identified a Marine killed in an apparently accidental shooting while on duty at a North Carolina base.
Camp Lejeune officials said in a statement late Wednesday that 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Mark N. Boterf of Crowley, Texas, was killed. Boterf was with 2nd Radio Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group and temporarily assigned as a Marine sentry. He joined the Marine Corps in 2012.
A Pentagon spokesman said Wednesday indications point to a "negligent discharge" as the cause of Tuesday's death in a guard shack at the base's main gate.
Base spokesman Nat Fahy says it will take weeks to confirm the shooting was accidental.
The Pentagon says another Marine who discharged a single shot from an M4 rifle was taken into custody. He hasn't been identified publicly.
