CAMERON Nina Kay Moore, 50, who’s named in a warrant charging theft over $1,500, but under $20,000 in an incident that cost a Cameron restaurant owner who thought he was making a down payment on a house $8,450, was in custody Wednesday in Montgomery County, police said.
The victim was bilked in a scheme in which a woman who represented herself as the agent for a residence collected a down payment on the property, attempting to sell the home without the owner’s knowledge, police said.
The investigation was expanding Wednesday after additional victims came forward to report they were also scammed.
Two additional warrants were issued for Moore Wednesday stemming from cases in Cameron, police chief Randy Dixon said in a news release.
Hewitt police and the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office have also received complaints and residents of the Georgetown-Austin area have called Cameron police to report they were victims as well, Dixon said.
Investigators have documented the theft of a total of $17,210 to date, Dixon said and have contacted the Texas Real Estate Commission.
Police first learned of the scam on June 21, when a would-be homebuyer called to report that he was unable to reach Moore after he gave her an $8,450 down payment for a house off of West Main Street in Cameron, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
The checks the buyer wrote had been cashed and Moore had signed them, the affidavit said.
The home’s owner confirmed to police that Moore was his realtor, but said he didn’t know there was a buyer interested in the property and said he hadn’t received any money from Moore, the affidavit said.
Investigators were asking anyone with information about the case to call the Cameron Police Department at (254) 697-6574.
