AMARILLO, Texas - Numerous major Texas Panhandle highways were closed for the night as subfreezing temperatures froze ice and compacted snow on the pavement.

The Texas Department of Transportation website showed most major routes in the region were closed.

The closing of U.S. 287 from Amarillo to east of Childress prompted the American Red Cross to open a shelter for stranded motorists in Clarendon, 60 miles southeast of Amarillo. That's in addition to Red Cross shelters in Tulia for stranded Interstate 27 motorists and Groom for stranded Interstate 40 motorists. Tulia is 50 miles south of Amarillo, and Groom is 45 miles east of Amarillo.

Red Cross spokeswoman Martha Riddlesburger says about 50 stranded motorists were housed at the Tulia shelter. Red Cross spokesman Steven Pair says 45 motorists sought shelter in Groom.
