BASTROP COUNTY - The Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative says it has settled nearly all of the 70 or so lawsuits claiming negligence led to the 2011 Bastrop wildfires that destroyed hundreds of homes and killed two people.
In September of that year trees knocked down Bluebonnet power lines in two separate locations, sparking the fires. The company was accused of gross negligence for not maintaining the trees around those lines.
The amount of the settlement has not been released, but the company did release a statement, saying "Bluebonnet's insurance carrier has settled the lawsuits with nearly all of the plaintiffs in the Bastrop County complex wildfire... This settlement is a positive outcome for Bluebonnet and will have no negative financial impact on co-op members. We are proceeding with our suit against Asplundh and will vigorously pursue our interests through the legal process."
