BRYAN It's the newest store in town. Wednesday, a new Walmart opens its doors to the public for the first time.
Off Villa Maria and FM 2818, the 155,000 square foot store is stocked and ready to go. Even the new store manager has special ties to Bryan/College Station.
In less than 24 hours, new Walmart employees will put their training into action. Bryan's second Walmart opens mid-spring break. The new store is actually smaller than the Briarcrest location. James Boyer is the manager.
"I've been with Walmart 26 years and I think the last time I opened a store was back in 1989-1990? And it wasn't like this," laughs Boyer.
"This is new to me."
The new store has everything you need. From produce to electronics, and everything in between. Located on Bryan's southwest side, it's connection to Aggieland is strong. Boyer has been coming to B/CS since he was three. He's a third generation Aggie with family living in the area.
"This is a homecoming for me and I am happy to be here," said Boyer.
Employees and managers at the new Bryan Walmart went from empty to full shelves in just four weeks. Providing over 100,000 different items for customers, ready to go, on day one.
The rush is on to finish stocking the shelves. Wednesday morning, they flip the switch from preparing the store, to running it. Boyer hopes customers will welcome them to the neighborhood.
"I hope that they're glad we're here and I hope that we can give them the type of customer service they've been looking for and the biggest thing is we just want to be part of the community," said Boyer.
A community that continues to grow.
The new store is bringing over 300 jobs to Bryan. Managers tell us they still have about 60 left to fill. Interested applicants may also apply online at http://careers.walmart.com.
