KILGORE, Texas (AP) - Officers in East Texas have returned gunfire and killed a man suspected in the fatal shooting of a woman.
Kilgore police Capt. Roman Roberson says officers Tuesday morning responded to 911 calls about a woman shot at a house. Investigators found her dead at the scene.
Police say a man with a rifle emerged from some woods and shot at officers.
Officers returned fire and killed the suspect, whose name wasn't immediately released. Authorities haven't released the name of the slain woman or her relationship with the gunman.
No officers were hurt. Investigators are trying to determine what prompted the original slaying.
Police in Kilgore, 110 miles southeast of Dallas, responded to the emergency calls, along Gregg County sheriff's deputies, Texas troopers and Texas Rangers. Some nearby highways were closed.
