A 36-year-old Washington County woman was murdered in her home this morning. The Washington County sheriff says it happened around 10 Monday morning. They received a 911 call about a shooting in the 8700 block of FM 50, just northeast of Brenham.
Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak says 36-year old Rachelle Nowak was shot multiple times by Anthony Ray Burns of Brenham just before 10 Monday morning. It's unclear the relationship between the two, but the sheriff says the crime was not random.
The home is located just a few miles south of Independence in Washingon County off FM 50; Sheriff Hanak says first responders were dispatched to this two-story home in reference to a shooting in progress. When they arrived, that's when they found Nowak with multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect did flee the area, however we are told he was apprehended and is in custody.

According to Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak, at approximately 10:00 am, Monday, February 3, 2014, deputies responded to a 911 call at a residence in the 8700 block of FM 50 in reference to a shooting. The caller indicated the suspect had shot an individual within the resident and had departed the scene in a vehicle traveling north on FM 50.
A short time later deputies arrived at the residence and learned that 36 year old Brenham resident Rachelle Nowak had been shot. Minutes later, Washington County Sheriff’s Sergeant Investigator Mark Whidden observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle traveling north on FM 50. Sergeant Whidden conducted a traffic stop and detained the driver and vehicle. The suspect, identified as 43 year old Brenham resident Anthony Wayne Burns, was later charged with murder and remains in the Washington County jail.
The investigation was conducted by members of the sheriff’s office, the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the Texas Highway Patrol, and the Texas Rangers. No further details are available.
