A wastewater construction project turned deadly this afternoon when a construction worker was killed.

Police say Armando Gonzalez, 49, was working at the construction site in the 8200 block of Burgess near Easterwood Airport. Investigators say he was crushed by two shoring panels.

A crew of about 10 people were building a lift station for the Texas A&M Health Science Center wastewater.

"From what I understand, the walls shifted and he got caught in it and it pinned him down,” said Patricia Logan with the College Station Police Department.

Logan says two shoring panels -- each weighing 1,500 pounds and 20 feet in length -- fell on Gonzalez.

“There's loose soil, so that loose soil can make it all collapse. It makes those walls shift, so it just makes it a dangerous place to be. It’s 30-40 feet deep so it makes it that much harder to just get down there,” said Logan.

Gonzalez died instantly.

Emergency crews spent around four hours trying to safely remove his body.

Gonzales worked for Elliott Construction out of Wellborn. The company was contracted by the city of Bryan to conduct work on infrastructure for the growing bio corridor research infrastructure.

We were not able to reach anyone at Elliot Construction for comment.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials are expected to investigate the accident.
