AUSTIN, Texas -- A special State Board of Education panel is reviewing a curriculum system used by hundreds of Texas school districts - but which some conservatives claim promotes anti-American values.

Board chairwoman Barbara Cargill, R-The Woodlands, announced Monday she has named three board Republicans and one Democrat to the panel on the CSCOPE system.

Three members of the governing board that helped create CSCOPE are also on the panel, which meets in late March. It will then appoint parents, educators, business leaders and curriculum experts to examine CSCOPE content, beginning with social studies.

CSCOPE is used by more than 800 Texas school districts. It helps teachers adhere to state educational requirements with Web-based lesson plans and exams.

But conservative activists say it promotes progressive ideology and that some lesson plans are pro-Islam.
