Parts Of The Brazos Valley Back In A Drought

Updated: Thu 6:38 PM, Sep 13, 2012

The rain is a welcomed sight here in the Brazos Valley.

After two years of drought sparked by La Nina, a wet start to 2012 helped get parts of the Brazos Valley out of an extreme drought. But we're not out of the dry spell just yet.

"We had a lot of rain during the winter and spring which was great but it basically shut off at the beginning of April and we've been running below normal since then," said Dr. John W. Nielsen-Gammon, Professor at Texas A&M and Texas State Climatologist.

A summer that saw slim amounts of rain has put the Brazos Valley back into a moderate drought.

"It's what we call an agricultural drought. Plants are having difficulty at this point but water supplies are still good, reservoir levels are fine and stream flows are fairly good right now. So it's mainly a short term drought at this point," said Nielsen-Gammon.

The rains expected over the next few days will help our part of the state while others will still be begging for more.

"One storm event like this can help us but places like west Texas where it's been really dry for the past two years it's going to take several events like this to make a difference," said Nielsen-Gammon.

But relief may be on its way when the holiday season hits home.

"This winter it looks like a weak El Nino and that usually means reality cool and wet conditions during the winter time. So hopefully that pans out for us because we really need a nice wet winter," said Nielsen-Gammon.

So far this year Bryan/College Station has received 31 and half inches of rain.
