Fans Rent, Buy Homes for Game Day Weekend

Updated: Thu 6:53 PM, Oct 18, 2012

Game day home rentals has become a booming business in Aggieland. Instead of renting hotel rooms, many people are renting houses and condos.

Stephanie Rammrath and her family usually spend game days in College Station with two other Sugarland families.

“There’s plenty of room here for three families and we have a great time,” said Rammrath.

They’ve spent many game day weekends at their "Home Away from Home". At least that's what Pam Merkin calls her property on Vacation Rental by Owner, a home rental website.

“We have rented through Vacation Rental by Owner ourselves multiple times, so I told my husband, “Let’s try it.” I wish I had three of these for game days. I could rent them all out,” said Merkin.

Merkin has her three-bedroom, three-bathroom condo rented out for every game day this season.

Bryan College Station Real Estate Agent Jen Zweiaker says she's noticed more and more people doing the same thing- renting their properties out for game day weekends. In fact, some of her clients buy properties in order to rent them out to game day visitors.

“Really with the announcement of A&M joining the SEC, we've seen a lot more people taking advantage of a niche opportunity,” said Zweiaker.

Some people rent condos and homes for the weekend, but others take game day to a whole new level.

“There are actually 15 homes that are fully constructed on this street. Only 4 people live here year round...everybody else just comes in for game days,” said Zweiaker.

Zweiaker says there are plenty of people willing to buy vacation houses for game day weekends and special occasions.

It’s clear that game day has a big impact on Aggieland real estate, and Pam Merkin thinks she knows why.

“I think if you're an Aggie fan, you're an aggie fan...and you're going to come watch the football games,” said Merkin.

Whether that means renting a room or buying a house…
