AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry says he never tried making a deal with an Austin district attorney about vetoed state funding that's now the focus of a grand jury investigation.
Perry said Tuesday he would let the case "play out its course" as a grand jury in Austin considers whether the possible 2016 Republican presidential candidate abused his power last summer.
It was the first time Perry has said anything public about the investigation since a grand jury was seated last month. He said he would let the record stand before disappearing into an elevator at the Capitol.
Perry vetoed $7.5 million for public corruption prosecutors after Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg refused to resign following a drunken driving arrest.
The grand jury is next scheduled to meet Friday.
