Authorities say a pilot has been injured in the Houston-area crash of her single-engine plane.

The plane went down Saturday night in a wooded area of Baytown.

Linda Shackelford, 57, was on her way to La Porte from Mississippi when the engine failed on her small Cessna plane, according state troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Officials said that Shackelford is lucky to be alive after she was able to put down her single-engine plane in a wooded area near intersection of J.B. Leferve Road and Market Street.

The Baytown Fire Department and Life Flight responded to the crash site at about 9 p.m. When they arrived, Shackelford was already being treated by EMS.

She was airlifted in stable condition to a local hospital, officials said.
Federal Aviation Administration is conducting an investigation into the crash.

Shackelford works at NASA as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the effects weightlessness has on bone density.

Baytown is 20 miles east of Houston.
