Officials say they are investigating a crime scene in Hearne where an officer-involved shooting occurred Sunday.

Hearne Police Department detectives say they responded to a call of shots fired on the 800 block of South Riley at 2:32 AM Sunday. Police say a caller reported that someone was shooting a gun from a white vehicle in the Columbus Village Apartments parking lot.

Officers arrived and located the vehicle in question. An officer-involved shooting occurred and one subject was shot and killed. A gun that does not belong to police was recovered at the scene.

"Next thing I know my sister ran into my bedroom screaming that he had been shot and killed," said Yulanda Nelson, the shooting victim's aunt.

Family members identified the victim as 28-year-old Tederalle Satchell. They say he was mentally challenged.

"You could tell something was missing. He wasn't a normal child...he was slower than most children," said Nelson.

Public records show Satchell has an extended criminal history in Brazos County involving drugs and theft. He also spent two years at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance in a drug free zone. He was released Oct. 31, 2012.

Family members do not believe Satchell owned a gun.

Friends and family gathered at the Columbus Village Apartments for a candlelight vigil Sunday night.

Texas Rangers and Department of Public Safety are assisting Hearne Police with the investigation.
