A Corpus Christi man described by neighbors and police as mentally ill was shot dead by police after officers said he opened fire on them after a 5½-hour standoff.
Daniel Christopher Scott died early Monday after the standoff at his home. Police Chief Floyd Simpson says the 56-year-old man called police to his home Sunday night, saying he had armed and barricaded himself and feeling threatened by his neighbors.
Police negotiators worked for hours to try to persuade the man to disarm. Simpson says Scott finally opened fire on the officers, who returned fire, killing him.
Simpson says two veteran officers have been placed on restricted duty pending investigation, in accord with department policy after a police shooting.
