AUSTIN, Texas - - The House has passed a sweeping package of public education overhauls - after nine hours of often-fierce debate.
Approved 145-2, House Bill 5 allows students to graduate without having to take Algebra II or other advanced math and science classes. It also cuts the number of standardized tests students have to pass from 15 to five.
The measure was sponsored by Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock, a Killeen Republican who chairs the chamber's Public Education Committee. It is designed to give more flexibility to students who want to focus on vocational training rather than getting ready for college.
Lawmakers slogged through 165 proposed amendments to the bill over nine hours, but Aycock's bill was approved Tuesday night with little major changes.
It now goes to the state Senate.
