AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Dozens of protesters have marched through the Texas Capitol demanding expansion of the Medicaid program, but hopes for the program were fading.
Members of the Texas Organizing Project marched inside the Capitol rotunda Wednesday, chanting "We need health care, we can't wait." But the only chance now to include the working poor in the health program for the destitute and disabled is to add it to another bill.
The Texas House missed a Tuesday night deadline to put a conservative bill up for consideration that was called "The Texas Solution."
The demonstrators singled out Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who presides over the Texas Senate, for his opposition to Medicaid expansion.
More than 24 percent of Texans do not have health insurance, the highest rate in the country.
