AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The panel that regulates the Texas oil and gas industry is waiting on more information before accepting any linkage between increased seismic activity and drilling activity, especially hydraulic fracturing - or fracking.
Texas Railroad Commission Executive Director Milton Rister told a special Texas House subcommittee in Austin on Monday that the panel was reviewing how it regulates wells used for storing wastewater from drilling. He declined to offer specifics and warned against "a knee-jerk reaction" that would place hurdles to the booming oil and gas drilling industry Texas is seeing.
The House Subcommittee on Seismic Activity heard testimony Monday on whether drilling and fracking has factored in a series of more than 25 earthquake detected around Azle since November. The most recent significant tremor came Jan. 28.
