Residence Hall Move-In For The Fall Semester At Texas A&M Starts Sunday

COLLEGE STATION – Aggies by the thousands will soon return to the Texas A&M University campus in preparation for the beginning of fall classes on Aug. 26, and university officials have designated Sunday (Aug. 18) as Residence Hall Move-In Assistance Day.

The program, developed by the Department of Residence Life, is designed to welcome new and returning students and their parents by helping them move personal belongings into the residence halls, Residence Life officials note.

They say that a survey conducted over the past few years shows that, for various reasons, the majority of residents prefer to move into the halls on a Sunday. This can cause some traffic congestion, and officials have planned accordingly to make the process go as smoothly as possible. In addition to extending hospitality and a warm welcome, the day also embodies some of the university’s core values, such as selfless service and respect.

As in years past, extra resources will be devoted to move-in day to make things easier for new and returning students and their parents. University transportation officials and police officers add that teams of volunteers will be on hand to welcome and assist students and parents and their help will ensure unloading goes as quickly as possible and the designated unloading zones near the residence halls do not get too congested.

The Residence Life Department, along with representatives from University Police, the Recycling Center, Dining Services, Transportation Services, Student Life, the Corps of Cadets and various members of the administration, faculty and staff began planning for this day not long after the last move-in.

The teams of move-in volunteers – including administrators, faculty, staff and students – will be on duty in specific areas from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin is scheduled to be there between 8 and 10 a.m. to welcome the Aggies.

Members of the volunteer move-in teams will wear distinctive T-shirts so students and parents will easily recognize them. They will help unload vehicles as they pull up into unloading zones. The volunteers will also help load carts and dollies, available at no charge for those moving in, and help students get their belongings to their rooms. Volunteer applications are no longer being accepted online, however, any individuals or student organizations wishing to volunteer can contact Ruth Ann Wolfe at (979) 862-3158 or ruthann@housing.tamu.edu.

As a concession to the summer heat, refreshment stations will be set up in strategic locations offering free bottles of water provided by Pepsi. Dining Services officials say dining facilities that will be open during move-in can be found at http://dining.tamu.edu/.

If unfamiliar with campus, new students and their families can also get information by downloading free mobile apps for their cell phones that will give them access to campus maps, directories and on-campus dining information, as well as a calendar of events and sports information. Free downloads and updates are available through the Texas A&M website at http://www.tamu.edu/mobile/apps/.

Transportation Services is providing additional traffic control in highly congested areas during peak times Aug. 18-21. Drivers in the campus community should expect delays during this peak traffic period and plan accordingly. One-hour temporary curbside parking will be allowed in designated campus locations in an effort to ease the congestion and facilitate move-in. These areas will be marked with signs. Bicyclists are encouraged to use extreme caution as certain bike lanes will be obstructed during move-in week.

On the central and south areas of campus, East Lamar and Lot 6 will be used by students and parents as a temporary unloading zone on Sunday. Lubbock Street will be controlled by Transportation Services officers and vehicles will exit Lubbock by passing in front of the Commons.

On the North side of campus, portions of Lot 30 will be used by students and parents as temporary unloading zones. Asbury, Central Houston, Jones and Hogg Streets will be controlled by Transportation Services officers with one hour parking allowed curbside for unloading.

Transportation Services will also provide free move-in shuttles from Reed Arena Lot 100 to the Northside and Southside areas for parents and other visitors. These shuttles will run Sunday (Aug.18 - from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. These stops are also serviced by Route 01 Break Service Monday – Friday, Aug.19-23, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fall Weekend Transit Service begins Aug. 24.
