Running for Candy Canes and Hunger

It sounds like something a kid could only dream of: running in the hallways, without getting in trouble, all for a good cause!

Well, this weekend, Pebble Creek Elementary held such a fundraiser. The goal was to collect a ton of food for the Food for Families Food Drive benefiting the Brazos Valley Food Bank.

Parents and administrators cheered on students as they ran laps inside the halls of Pebble Creek Elementary.

“Come on guys, all the way!”

More than 100 kiddos laced their shoes up early Saturday morning, packed up at least one canned good and took off running through the halls of Pebble Creek Elementary. Instead of pushing for a personal record, this race was measured through winning as many of those delicious peppermint festive treats as possible.

“They run a lap and they get a dot on their hand for every lap they run, and when they get to four they get a stamp and once they have a stamp they get a candy cane,” said Annette Roraback Pebble Creek Elementary Principal.

However, the race wasn’t just about candy canes. Pebble Creek Elementary's entire effort to collect canned goods for the Food for Families Food Drive was meant to not only help those in need, but to also teach students a very valuable lesson.

“One thing we do try and teach kids here is that one person can make a difference in the community,” said Roraback.

Roraback says they wanted to make this process as fun as possible and she says one administrator in particular made sure of it.

“Our Assistant Principal, Mr. Symank agreed that if we raised a ton of food this year, that he would dress up as an elf on our sing a long day, which is on December 19th,” said Roraback.

It looks like students will get to see Mr. Symank dressed up as Santa’s helper, as they’ve already surpassed their goal of collecting least 5,000 pounds of canned food. They’re now hoping to raise 6,000 pounds.
