GALVESTON, Texas (AP) Southeast Texans are to mark the five-year anniversary of when Hurricane Ike made landfall just outside of Galveston, becoming the costliest natural disaster in Texas history.
Galveston and other cities and counties hit hard by Ike say their communities are in pretty good shape but rebuilding efforts still continue. Ike caused more than $29 billion in damage.
Officials in Galveston on Thursday planned to tout how the island community has rebounded from the hurricane.
After Ike made landfall on Sept. 13, 2008, its storm surge damaged three-fourths of Galveston's homes. The tourist destination suffered more than $3.2 billion in damage.
Five years later, tourism to the island is on the rise as beaches have been replenished and homes and other structures have been repaired.
