More than 3,000 runners will hit the streets of Bryan-College Station this Sunday in less than ideal marathon running weather.
Runners and organizers of the 2012 Scott & White Healthcare BCS Marathon are preparing for an anticipated warm and humid start.
It's one last run for Janine McClain of Bryan.
"It's just progressively getting longer and longer until the 13 miles on Sunday," said McClain.
She ran the half marathon last year, but this year the conditions will be different.
It's expected to be a warm start in the in the mid 60's and 100 percent humidity.
So she's already hydrating.
"Well, because we started in the summer training the heat won't be too bad that morning. But I do plan on drinking a lot of water and using the cooling stations if I need too and also paying attention to my body. If I feel hot slow down," she said.
In College Station Scott & White Healthcare crews are adding extra IV bags, supplies, and first aid for the route if runners overheat.
Some of the other first aid items you'll see on race day include several metal tubs. They'll be filled with ice so that runners can jump in and cool down if they get overheated.
Dr. Boone Barrow is the Medical Team Race Director and tells us they'll have two air conditioned school buses runners can chill down in during the race. Water and Gatorade will be available every 1.5 miles.
"There's a reason marathons in Texas are run in December and January, we just happened to get a bad weekend. So from a marathon standpoint even though the weather is beautiful outside, it’s not something we are looking for," said Dr. Barrow, a Scott & White Healthcare Sports Medicine Physician.
"We've communicated with the runners that it is going to be less than ideal conditions that they may not want to try run their fastest race. They may just want to slow down enjoy the race," said Chris Field, the Scott & White Healthcare BCS Marathon Race Director.
"It's more important that I finish the race healthy and strong," said Janine McClain, before she took off on her training run.
Janine McClain can't wait for Sunday, even if she may not run a personal best time.
The Marathon and Half Marathon, sponsored by Scott & White, start at 7 A.M. Sunday at Wolf Pen Creek Park on Holleman Drive in College Station.
Packet pickup is from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. Saturday at the College Station Hilton.
Race organizers suggest if you are participating to hydrate in the days before the race.
