Senate May Reject Texas Insurance Commissioner

Texas Insurance Commissioner Eleanor Kitzman could have trouble keeping her job as she goes before state senators for confirmation.

Kitzman was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry in 2011, after the end of that year's legislative session. The Austin American-Statesman reports that she faces a formal confirmation process expected to begin in March.

She needs two-thirds of the senators to vote to confirm her. Democrats have enough votes to defeat her nomination.

Several Democrats question whether Kitzman is too soft on the insurance industry at the expense of consumers. Sen. Kirk Watson of Austin calls her "biased in favor of the industry."

At least one Republican, Sen. Bob Deuell of Greenville, also accuses her of ignoring rules.

Kitzman says she welcomes the chance to give senators "complete information."
