Shell Oil Company and Motiva Enterprises will present a $150,000 donation and an additional $10,000 in fuel gift cards on Wednesday to Texas Forest Service’s Volunteer Fire Department assistance fund.
A brief donation ceremony is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department, 18215 Buddy Riley Blvd., Magnolia.
Volunteer fire departments have served as the first line of defense against wildfires that have devastated the Lone Star State this year. More than 28,000 blazes have burned almost 4 million acres of land since wildfire season began on Nov. 15, 2010.
The fire season has taken a toll on volunteer fire department personnel and equipment across the state – prompting Shell executives to come forward with a donation that will provide relief to the departments that have been stretched to their limits this year.
The funds will be dispersed through Texas Forest Service’s VFD assistance fund, a grant program through which departments can apply for vehicles, fire and rescue equipment, computer systems, training and other items.
Shell has requested that $25,000 of its donation be allocated to the Bastrop Volunteer Fire Department and $25,000 be allocated for the VFDs in Grimes, Waller and Montgomery counties, where devastating wildfires occurred this year.
Texas Forest Service, a member of the Texas A&M University System, serves as the incident management agency for state emergencies.
