GOLIAD, Texas (AP) - A South Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison over a 2003 house fire that left his wife dead.

A judge in Goliad on Thursday sentenced 45-year-old Delbert Mills after convicting him of murder in the death of 32-year-old Patricia Mills.

Her relatives wanted the June 2003 case reopened. Mills was charged in 2011.

The Victoria Advocate (http://bit.ly/UVbpMP ) reports prosecutor Michael Sheppard says Mills had an affair and sought to avoid paying for a divorce or child support for his son. Sheppard also says Mills in recent years talked to many different people about being able to start a fire and not get caught.

The defense said there's no evidence proving Mills started the fire and the source of the blaze was never determined.

Mills did not testify.
