A South Texas gang member is set to die for his involvement in a botched ambush in which four women died 11 years ago.
Robert Gene Garza would be the 12th inmate executed this year in Texas. The 30-year-old belonged to a Rio Grande Valley gang known as the Tri-City Bombers blamed for shooting at six women to keep two of them from testifying in another gang member's case. Evidence showed the other gang member took a plea deal and there was no testimony and no trial.
Garza argues a statement he made to Hidalgo County authorities implicating himself was coerced.
His lethal injection Thursday evening in Huntsville could be the last using the state's existing supply of pentobarbital. Prison officials say their inventory is expiring.
