A South Texas woman has been indicted on a capital murder charge after her 6-year-old stepson drowned while in her care during a beach outing.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports a Nueces County grand jury Thursday indicted 47-year-old Laura Lee Day of Corpus Christi. She's also charged with injury to a child with intent to cause serious bodily injury and endangering a child.
Day, who remains in the Nueces County Jail, could face execution if convicted in the Oct. 5 death of Taylor Syring. Police say Day told them she let the boy remove his life jacket while swimming alone in shallow water as she watched him.
His mother, Kelly Syring, says Taylor wasn't a strong swimmer and she would never let him go into the water by himself.
