St. Anthony Preparing for 70th Annual Spaghetti Dinner

If you spent anytime in Downtown Bryan Friday afternoon, you might have caught a whiff of it.

The folks over at St. Anthony's Catholic Church are preparing for their annual spaghetti dinner, a tradition that's been going on for a very long time.

"Yes, 70 years. A lot older than I am," joked Father Patrick Ebner.

Father Ebner helps out where he can but it's the dozens of volunteers that bring decades of experience to the dinner that makes the difference.

"It's multiple generations. Three, four, five generations of parishioners helping out with the spaghetti diner," said Father Ebner.

"I guess word has just spread around and everybody likes spaghetti," said Callie Santana.

Santana is one of those long time parishioners. She was baptized at St. Anthony's during the great depression and she's been a part of the dinner for a long time.

She works like crazy preparing the meal but don't expect to see her serving on Sunday.

"I don't work Sunday. Sunday, I'm just a visitor," joked Santana.

The secret may be behind the sauce. Something that made it's way to Bryan from across the pond.

"It is handed down from a recipe not only from Italy but from Sicily,' said Father Ebner.

And the sweet sauce from Sicily will be a succulent success for St. Anthony's on Sunday.

The 70th annual St. Anthony Spaghetti Dinner will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning and last till 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon and there will also be to go plates.

The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids.
