Investors shook off some downbeat news on hiring and helped stocks to close mixed in Wednesday trading.
The Dow finished the session down 11 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to 13,269. The S&P dropped nearly 5 points to 1,402. The Nasdaq gained 9 points to 3,060.
Investors are preparing for tomorrow's release of the monthly unemployment report from the Labor Department.
Before Wednesday's opening bell on Wall Street, payroll processor ADP said that U.S. businesses added 119,000 jobs in April, far fewer than the previous month's pace.
