Some College Station residents that live near the intersection of a recent accident, where a student was hit by a car, say they aren't surprised it happened.
"There are always people standing on the medians and it's really nerve-racking as a driver trying to be aware of everyone that's there, but also pay attention to cars on the road,” said Lauren Farris, a College Station resident.
The accident happened around 4 p.m. Monday at the intersection of FM 2818 and Welsh Avenue near A&M Consolidated High School.
Police say Joshua Odle was trying to cross from the southside to the northside of 2818. A Jeep Wrangler was westbound on FM 2818 and struck Odle.
We went to see if the roads are dangerous for pedestrians at that intersection around 3:45 p.m., when most students at the high school leave for the day.
In a span of about 10 minutes, we saw several students jaywalking.
While our cameras were rolling, we also found students walking within inches of moving traffic.
"Usually they are in the middle by the stoplight or across from it. They don't walk on the cross line and they are all walking down the middle of the roads. It's pretty bad around like 3:15,” said Courtney Chandler, a College Station resident.
Police advise drivers to be extra cautious in an area where some pedestrians, including students, tend to take risks.
The College Station Independent School District says there are no crossing guards at the school. Crossing guards are employed and subject to placement by the city.
