HOUSTON - Texas Southern University has suspended, revoked scholarships and permanently kicked out of the school's renowned band 10 students involved in hazing.

A university task force headed by President John M. Rudley announced the penalties on Tuesday.

Spokesman Kendrick D. Callis says the students were in the band's trumpet section.

A university statement says previous suspensions for other members of the 180-strong Ocean of Soul Marching Band have been lifted.

The band's performances will be reduced and closely monitored, and out-of-state travel will be decided on a case-by-case basis. The university has canceled the band's participation in the Thanksgiving Day parade and a "battle of the bands" in Atlanta.

The TSU incident comes in the wake of a hazing scandal involving the death of a Florida A&M University band member.
