Texas A&M Distinguished Graduate Students To Be Honored April 28th

COLLEGE STATION - Fifteen students pursuing masters’ and doctoral degrees have been named Texas A&M Distinguished Graduate Students for 2014.

The recipients are being recognized for exemplary accomplishments in one of two categories this year: Research, Doctoral and Teaching.
The 2014 recipients, along with their department and faculty advisor are as follows.

For Teaching
Tony Akl, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty advisor: Dr. Gerard Cote

Yuan Wang, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Faculty advisor: Dr. Renyi Zhang

Sarah Woller, Department of Neuroscience, Faculty advisor: Dr. Michelle Hook

Meredith Luttrell, Department of Health & Kinesiology, Faculty advisor: Dr. Christopher Woodman

Laiyin Zhu, Department of Geography, Faculty advisor: Dr. Steven Quiring.

“Doctoral students contribute to the research and teaching mission of the university, while also advancing scholarship through their own academic excellence and completion of their own advanced degrees. Thanks to the support we receive from The Association of Former Students for these awards, we are able to recognize these students, who are among the best and brightest in their fields,” noted Dr. Karen Butler-Purry, associate provost for graduate and professional studies. “They play a vital role in strengthening quality in academics at Texas A&M and carrying that experience with them throughout their careers.”
The 15 students will be honored at an awards ceremony on April 28, where each will be presented a framed certificate and custom gold watch from The Association. “The Association of Former Students takes great pride in supporting the Distinguished Graduate Student Awards which recognizes students who have achieved excellence in research and teaching,” stated Porter S. Garner III ’79, president and CEO. “We are honored to recognize these students who will go on to embody Texas A&M’s core values of Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, Loyalty, Respect, and Selfless Service, in their professional careers in academia and industry.”

The Distinguished Graduate Student Awards program will be part of Texas A&M’s Distinguished Day activities on April 28 that also include the Distinguished Achievement Awards program, celebrating exceptional accomplishment and academic excellence of outstanding university faculty, students, and staff. Distinguished recognition will continue that week with an evening reception on April 30 honoring Texas A&M University Distinguished Professors.
