The Texas A&M University golf course is halfway through its $5 million facelift and Tuesday Rene Rangel with Sterling Golf, the company behind the renovation, and designer Jeff Blume showed off the progress.

"We're behind about 30 days. We hope to make some of that up here in the next couple of months but we still anticipate opening in the fall," said Rangel.

Rangel hopes to have the course open in time for the Texas A&M home football game against Alabama. Currently the course is starting to take shape as work on the layout and slopes of the course come to a close.

"What we tried to do is take advantage of the views of the campus. I guess if you're a University of Texas guy or an SEC rival, you might not like those but most Aggies are going to love it," said Blume.

One addition to the course will be a sand soil base added to the fairways. With an overabundance of clay and hard dirt, the fairways will now have four inches of sand soil added to them. Normally found on greens and tee boxes, the mixture will ensure a high level playing turf and it's going to take a ton of it. Well, several tons.

"32,000 tons of sand will be brought in so we can put it on the surface for the fairways to create the best gowning environment and best maintenance of a golf course," said Rangel.

The sand work will cost an additional $750,000 but it's a costs Rangel is confident the course will make up.

"It'll be well worth it at the end of the day. It's going to save on maintenance costs and long term maintenance for the golf course, it's a very positive look on maintaining a very high level golf course for 20 or 30 years," said Rangel.

Now if you'd like to hear Tuesday's entire press conference regarding the update on the course's construction, you can find it in the video links above.
