Texas A&M to Auction Seats in B-17 for Pre-Game Flyover

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Many members of "The Greatest Generation" had the unique experience of flying in the B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft during World War II, and now that aircraft will be part of the first Texas A&M home football game flyover on Saturday, Aug. 31.

Seven seats on the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber for the flyover are being auctioned off on AggieAthletics.com. The auction ends Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. (CT).

The B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine aircraft that flew strategic bombing missions over Europe. The two nose seats on this aircraft would be an amazing experience. Additional seats are in the cockpit, and four in the radio room.

Anyone with a desire to fly in this aircraft may bid on this one-in-a-lifetime experience, however, participants must be at least 18 years of age and below the weight limit of 250 pounds per passenger.

The individuals who win the bid will need to arrive 45 minutes prior to the scheduled flight time to get acquainted with the plane and its crew. Seat assignments and safety precautions will be discussed as all passengers must be seated and must wear a seatbelt for all ground operations, takeoff and landing. Once airborne, the passengers will be allowed to move about the plane, take pictures and video.

Some things to remember, with warm conditions in Texas during September, the temperature inside the planes will be quite warm. Winners will be encouraged to dress comfortably and drink plenty of water before the flight. Ear plugs are provided and closed-toed shoes are a strong recommendation. No sandals or flip flops will be permitted. High or pointed heels are not permitted as well. Space is restricted inside the planes so the smaller the cameras or video recorders, the better.

The winners will NOT be allowed to handle the controls of the plane, but passengers will be allowed into the cockpit section during flight to observe the pilots, but FAA regulations prohibit passengers from occupying a pilot seat or interfering with the pilots during the flight.

Winners will be contacted following the conclusion of the auction.

The Texas A&M football team opens the 2013 season at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31 against Rice at Kyle Field.
