Texas Lawmakers Scramble as Deadlines Loom

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas lawmakers are meeting in Austin to beat key deadlines to pass legislation in the special session.

The House will take up major new restrictions on abortions in Texas on Sunday, measures that have attracted protests and lawsuits across the country. The Senate needs to finalize political maps and new sentencing rules for 17-year-olds convicted of capital murder.

Gov. Rick Perry called the Legislature into special session last month initially to make permanent the voting maps drawn by three federal judges in San Antonio. Attorney General Greg Abbott said the move will stop a lawsuit to completely overhaul the state's political districts.

Perry later added new funding for transportation and the other measures. So far none have reached his desk for signature and the session ends at midnight on Tuesday.
