BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) A South Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually abusing a young girl over seven years.
Elias Gaitan was sentenced Wednesday in Brownsville. A jury last month found the 34-year-old Brownsville man guilty of continuous sexual abuse of a child and other charges.
He will not be eligible for parole.
Prosecutors say the abuse of the victim began when she was 4.
They say Gaitan while incarcerated wrote letters to the girl, now 13, asking her to tell authorities that she imagined the sexual contact. Gaitan had told police that he "didn't force her."
Gaitan was prosecuted under the federal Jessica's Law, which imposes severe punishment on those found to have continuously abused a child.
