FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - The state's emergency management chief says tornadoes and storms that slammed North Texas last week have cost public agencies almost $17 million so far.

Nim Kidd said Wednesday the public costs from the April 3 storms include damage to roads, bridges and public buildings. The tally also takes into account the costs of cleaning up and responding to areas affected by the storms.

Texas is expected to formally request federal emergency aid by the end of this week. Kidd says officials are still working to determine what categories of aid Texas can request.

Kidd says almost all of the hundreds of homes seriously damaged in the storm were insured. One insurance industry group says damage claims in the storm have exceeded $300 million.

No storm-related deaths have been reported.
