Thanksgiving Meal Preparations Kick Into High Gear

Updated: Wed 10:00 PM, Nov 23, 2011

It's the season for giving thanks and enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner.

News 3 traveled around town and found people preparing to feed the less fortunate and also saw people taking a break from the kitchen and buying pre-cooked meals.

Thanksgiving time is often a busy time for most of us and a lot of work too.

But for Gloria Kennard of Morning Star Baptist Church feeding friends and complete strangers is something she's been doing for 23 years.

"I saw the need in the community and I need to do something for the community so I decided I'd do a Thanksgiving meal for the needy the sick, the shut-ins or whoever needs a meal," said Kennard of Bryan.

The tables are already set and the food is being prepared with enough to feed an army.

Folks will be fulfilled in lots of ways when they come to Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. They'll have can after can of vegetables, 70 pounds of ham and they'll also be cooking 29 turkeys.

Cal McNeill as well as co-workers with the Bank & Trust donated many of the groceries.

"It's just good people helping good people, because we live in Bryan-College Station where good people live," said McNeill a Commercial Loan Officer with The Bank & Trust.

In south Bryan it was also a hectic scene as Luby's Cafeteria prepares more than 230 Thanksgiving meals.

Jana Wolfshohl is hosting her family in College Station this week and came to buy what she calls good gravy at Luby's.

"Well I'm, we're picking up a lot of food to go from places and also I'm cooking some things so it's going to be a combination from my cooking and other people's cooking," Wolfshohl said.

"And we have so much to be thankful for," said Gloria Kennard.

Giving thanks and spending time with loved ones in more ways than one.

And the free thanksgiving meal event begins Thursday with a prayer service around 11 A.M. followed by a meal from 11:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. at the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Bryan.

The church is located at 310 W. Martin Luther King Junior Street and Sims Avenue in Bryan.

Volunteers are welcome to come help starting at 10:30 Thursday morning.
