The Salvation Army Low On Fans

Updated: Mon 11:15 PM, Jun 11, 2012

The Salvation Army doesn’t have nearly as many fans in stock as they did last year, and it isn’t because of a lack of donations.

Lt. Joe Contreras with The Salvation Army in Bryan says they usually have 500-600 fans every year in stock at the beginning of the season, but this year they have about 70.

"We just put a plea out every year for people in the community to give out of the goodness of their heart for others to withstand the heat,” said Contreras.

Contreras says he hasn't had time to organize a push for fans from the community and local organizations because some of the staff is relocating to another city, including Contreras.

"It kind of jumped up and caught us by surprise that we were moving. We had no idea that we are moving. We are kind of in the middle of a transition between officers,” said Contreras.

The push for fans took a back seat, but the need is very much in the forefront.

Contreras says residents have been calling in wanting to know about the fans.

The triple digit heat index kicked off the fan drive early.

"We don't want to turn anyone away and say we don't have them especially if we are in the middle of a drive,” said Contreras.

To pick up a fan, head over to the Salvation with a proof of residency in the Brazos Valley.

Residents are limited to one fan per household.

If you would like to donate money or fans, you can stop by The Salvation Army or call them at (979) 361-0618.
