Thieves Steal Hearne Family's Christmas Presents

Updated: Thu 1:37 PM, Mar 07, 2013

Thieves broke into a Hearne home Sunday and took off with everything under the Christmas tree and some of the family’s electronics.

Lourdes Vega, 12 years old, and her 9-year-old brother Este'ban said they were excited to open gifts Christmas morning, but now they’re disappointed.

“I can't believe someone would actually do that...take away a child's Christmas,” said Lourdes.

The children’s father, Abel Vega, says he can't afford to buy new gifts this Christmas. He says he'll have to save up, and make it up to his kids next year.

“Just the worst thing. I'm just trying to figure out what kind of animal would take something from a child at Christmas. That's as low as it gets. It’s really a shame,” said Corporal Jon Boller, Hearne Police Department.

Cpl. Boller says there are ways to protect your home against burglars when you're away.

“Speak to your neighbors. Let them know you'll be out of town. Let them know to look out for your house,” said Cpl. Boller.

The Hearne Police Department also recommends people report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

The Vegas were only away from their home for a few hours Sunday night, but they say they're not letting anything, or anyone, dampen their Christmas spirit.

“We’re just happy that we're ok, you know. Material stuff, you can replace that,” said Abel Vega.

Anyone who would like to help the family this Christmas should call the Hearne Police Department.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact Hearne Crimestoppers at 1-800-299-0191.
