Three Families Receive Habitat for Humanity Homes

The Bryan College Station Habitat for Humanity group has announced the completion and dedication of three new Habitat homes on Douglas Street in Bryan.

New homeowners Belia Molina, LaCourtney Dickey, and Sera Jackson took part in a ceremony Saturday morning to celebrate the completion of the new homes.

For Sera Jackson, this is the culmination of a long journey. In 2008 her son died of cancer. Then the following year the city condemned her crumbling house. But shortly after, she was approved to build a Habitat home. Thanks to the generosity of Mary Jones, a retired schoolteacher on her death bed at the time, the $40,000 sponsorship required to start building Sera's new home was secured.

Mary passed away in May, but left a lasting legacy - a decent home for the Jackson family.

The Bryan College Station Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Formed in 1989, the local affiliate is dedicated to eliminating poverty housing and making the right to simple, decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat for Humanity partners with low-income families and gives them an opportunity to work side by side with local volunteers in the construction of their homes. Once the homes are completed, families buy them at cost through zero-interest twenty to thirty-year mortgages. BCS Habitat has partnered with over 200 families impacting over 800 people over the past 21 years.
