TEMPLE A 2-year-old Temple girl died Monday at Scott & White Hospital after a pit bull her family was watching for a friend attacked her in the backyard of her home after she slipped out of the house without her parents’ knowledge.
The girl was identified as Je’vaeh Mayes, police Cpl. Christopher Wilcox said.
Officers were dispatched at around 11:30 a.m. Monday to the home in the 800 block of East Avenue M after receiving a report of a dog bite, Wilcox said.
While they were en route, an officer who was conducting an unrelated investigation in the Scott & White emergency room notified dispatchers that a toddler who had been attacked by a dog had just been admitted, Wilcox said.
Officers determined the toddler was the victim of the attack on East Avenue E, Wilcox said.
She died at the hospital.
Animal control officers confiscated the dog, which was held in quarantine Monday evening.
The attack is under investigation.
“The members of the Temple Police Department send their deepest condolences to the family of Je’vaeh during their time of mourning, Wilcox said.
