SAN MARCOS, Texas The capital murder trial has started in San Marcos for a man charged in the slaying of a 20-year-old woman who was raped, strangled and drowned in her bathtub in 1975 after going home for lunch.

Opening statements and testimony started Tuesday in the trial of 59-year-old Willie Jenkins, charged in the death of Sheryl Ann Norris. She worked as a secretary at the Crime Prevention Institute of Texas in San Marcos.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that Jenkins was identified as a suspect in 2010 after DNA collected from the crime scene was submitted to a national database. At the time, Jenkins was being held in a state hospital in California under a civil commitment order. He was convicted of four rapes in California and Texas.
