TxDOT Planning Overpass at Deadly Intersection in Grimes County

GRIMES COUNTY TxDOT is targeting an intersection between Bryan-College Station and Huntsville for a major safety improvement after a number of serious accidents over the past few years, including a recent one that killed a person.

Mikel Clark says he will never forget the sound of the deadly crash he witnessed on New Year's Eve.

"It was a loud crash and then the glass broke and the tires were screeching," said accident witness, Mikel Clark.

65-year-old Howard Gerber died in that crash at the intersection of Highway 30 and FM 244 in Carlos. He and his wife pulled in front of a bread truck and were broadsided.

Drivers said its tough to see oncoming traffic.

"You've got to pull that way just to be able to see down the road and there's always big trucks coming through here," said one driver.

TxDOT does not consider the intersection dangerous, but drivers we spoke with say they've seen fatal accidents happen and they are worried it will happen again.

"I think it's very dangerous," said David Neeley, a former Carlos resident.

Since 2009, TxDOT said there have been nine serious accidents at this intersection and now, it's become a part of the state's safety project.

"TxDOT's number one priority is safety, so if there is anything we can do to improve our roadways we are going to do that," said Bob Colwell with the Texas Department of Transportation.

He said TxDOT will build an overpass that will carry FM 244 over Highway 30, that way traffic never meets. Drivers are pleased something is being done to make this intersection safer.

"I've been in and out of here nearly all my life and it's been injuries, lots of injuries; families hurt because of it," Neeley said.

Construction is not set to start until this time next year, but everyone is hopeful this project will protect drivers and keep accidents big and small from happening. TxDOT estimates it will take about two years to complete the $8M overpass project.
