AUSTIN The Texas Transportation Commission has chosen a top Texas A&M official to be the new leader of the Texas Department of Transportation.
Friday, the commission voted in favor of Joe Weber, the vice president for student affairs at A&M, making him the new executive director of TxDOT.
“It is a true honor for me to be selected to lead TxDOT at this time in its evolution and as it continues to fulfill its mission,” Weber said in a statement. “I look forward to working closely with the dynamic TxDOT team, the Legislature and transportation stakeholders keen on using transportation as an economic development tool that continues to make Texas a great destination for businesses and visitors, and for the 26 million of us who call it home.”
A retired Marine Corps general who graduated from A&M in 1972, Weber returned to become the vice president job at his alma mater in 2008. His office works to provide programs and services to students to enhance their college experiences.
Texas Governor Rick Perry, a close friend of Weber since their time together as students at A&M, recommended Weber for the position.
“We are thrilled to have a leader with such stature and experience join the TxDOT team and be part of this great organization,” Ted Houghton, Chairman Texas Transportation Commission, said in the statement. “General Weber is the right person at the right time to make a great agency even better.”
Weber replaces Phil Wilson, who announced he was stepping down late last year to be the general manager for the Lower Colorado River Authority. James Bass has been serving in the interim executive director position at TxDOT.
Weber begins in his new role on April 23.
