TxDOT's Important Message to Drivers

Good to Know:

  • 84% of work zone fatalities are motorists.
  • There are more than 2,500 active work zones in Texas at any given time.
  • The top two causes of work zone-related fatalities are speeding and distracted driving (texting, putting on make up, eating, etc.).

BRYAN - To mark work zone awareness week, the Texas Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to be aware.

"Slow down, stay alert, and obey traffic signs to protect themselves and our roadside workers while traveling through a work zone," said Bob Colwell with the Texas Department of Transportation.

There are human faces and families behind the hardhats and road signs.

"It's very important to all of us that we get to go home every day and be with our families and our loved ones. We thank everybody for paying attention to the signs and the speed zones and everything else we have to aid people getting through our work zones," said Transportation Engineer Ryan Jackson.

TxDot says that the top two causes of roadway worker deaths are speeding and distracted driving. In Texas alone, there are at least 2,500 active work zones at any given time.
