Controllers to Return; Flight Delays Sway Congress

WASHINGTON - The Federal Aviation Administration says it will try to resume normal schedules for air traffic controllers as soon as possible.

It had been assigning unpaid days off for its 15,000 controllers as part of $85 billion in across-the-board budget cuts that Congress failed to avert.

But public anger over a week of flight delays prompted lawmakers to quickly pass legislation giving the FAA the authority to withdraw the furloughs by moving funds between accounts. The measure approved by the House today will allow the FAA to transfer funds for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Republicans accused the Obama administration of using the furloughs to score political points.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says Republicans were up in arms about flight delays but not about the sequester's impact on children in the Head Start program or seniors who depend on Meals on Wheels.
