The story of a Texas man's October arrest for failing to return an overdue library book went viral recently, sparking snarky headlines about library police and the Lone Star State extending its tough-on-crime bravado to books.
But this is not uncommon. Faced with shrinking budgets and rising costs, cities and towns nationwide have long issued arrest warrants for failure to return library property.
So an overdue book can land you in handcuffs.
Ask Jory Enck. He was arrested in Central Texas for not returning a GED study guide he checked out three years ago.
Enck declined to comment to The Associated Press, but told the Killeen Daily Herald he won't step in a library again.
